Aircraft noise, 4th December

What is the story behind all the aircraft noise.? Last year the occasional aircraft would fly over if it were off course, and we would hear aircraft in the distance on a clear day.

Now they start flying directly overhead from 6am - the noise is extremely disturbing.

I have heard that the council has been protesting about a change of flight path over South Hackney, but I am way over in the Queensbridge Ward - about a mile away from South Hackney.

You can see from the photo I took outside my kitchen door on the weekend that we see an awful lot of air traffic for somewhere not under the flight path.

And when I email the people at City Airport or Heathrow they tell me that there are no planes flying over E8!

Maybe we should start an East London protest group. (It might be prudent to point out that Hackney people are generally a little less genteel about their protesting than the people of West London. We should use Off Broadway's "Welcome to Hackney" photo as the logo!)

Line marking work not performec, 4th December

The council suspended parking along the length of Albion Drive last Friday and this Monday for "road lining". The work was expected to take a day, but they allowed a second day in case of inclement weather.

Over 150 people removed their cars to adjoining streets and parking police swooped before 8am Friday morning to ticket any cars remaining in the street - despite residents telling them they would move the cars in a few minutes - as soon as they were out of their pyjamas.

Then the street stood empty all day. On Monday everybody moved their cars again and the street stood empty all day.

No work at all was done on the street. No workmen so much as drove down the street - so all those people moved their cars for nothing. The heavy-handed parking police issued tickets for no reason other than revenue. The road lines have not been touched.

And even on adjoining streets where the lines were looked at, only the parking boxes were overwritten - no improvements to the centre lines or speed bump warnings, where the most work is needed.

Has the council mismanaged this, or did the line marking contractors claim for work they did not perform?

I suspect that next time the council asks us all to move our cars the neighbourhood may be a little less cooperative.

Dirty illuminated plastic bollards on pedestrian islands, 4th December

These, and others on Dalston Lane at the top of Navarino Road, are so mud-spattered they are low-visibility even when lit. They need washing! I'm sure this is a widespread problem...

Bent Pool of London Signage Pole, 3rd December

There is a Pool of London direction street sign that is damaged and bent. However the Pool of London ceased to exist a while ago, and the body that replaced it, the London Bid Improvement Area doesn't cover this area. Southwark says its not their sign, and no one will take ownership to get it fixed.

Excessive noise, 29th November

The street vendors on the pavement between Vallance road (B108) and Fulbourne steet play their music at excessively loud levels on Saturdays. It's so loud, it sounds like it's coming from within our flat. Is there any way of getting them to turn it down?

Consistent Double Yellow Line Parking, 23rd November

On Cheshire St outside Reflection House, resulting in failure for residents to see *in any direction* whether traffic is coming. As vans and other commercial vehicles use Cheshire Street as a rat run and hence drive very fast, there have been three instances where me and my child have nearly been hit by speeding vehicles.

Cable Company utility box, 22nd November

On lots of streets there are black metal service cabinets about 1m high which are normally shut. They usually belong to BT or the cable TV/phone companies. The one on Featherstone Street (and others like it) has been open for months - and the doors block the pavement. There is no sign inside telling you who to call - inspecting the equipment makes me think they belong to Telewest (now Virgin Media).
These open cabinets collect rubbish and the owners never ever shut them.

Cycle lights, 13rd November

The registering of the button to activate the cycle lights (going northbound on Queen St at jn with Queen Victoria St) seems to be badly programmed - you have to wait at least a full cycle of the lights before the cycle phase goes green, even if you press the button well before the east/westbound lights have gone red. Is this a fault?

Drug users, 12th November

At least two men smoking crack have separately been sitting on the stairwell of Ebenezer Mussel House, openly smoking crack. I have seen them 3 times in the last week, and it's both in the early evening and late at night. They are intimidating and it is worrying as lots of young people live in the block.

Blocked road and crossing causing danger to pedestrians, 11th November

The pedestrian crossing east of Whitechapel Station, usually very busy with anyone crossing Whitechapel Road to travel South from the station, has been blocked for a couple of weeks for road repairs. No signage or alternative crossing has been provided, and the entire roadworks have been set up in an extremely haphazard manner. Large numbers of pedestrians have no choice but to wander randomly across an extremely busy road. This is very dangerous.

Flooding, 10th November

After heavy rainfall the road floods badly opposite the Buddhist centre in Roman Road. The area appears to be by a drain so it must have something to do with the drain.

The cars shoot through the water and soak all pedestrians on the footpath. This problem has been going on year after year. Please investigate.
